The dissent

The most-upvoted critical review (2 votes, 3.0★).

“Another thing I didn't like about this course is the method of grading for the peer reviewed assignment. I wasn't graded properly in this peer reviewed assignment which made me fail the assignment wrongfully. To make the grading process accurate, I feel it would be better for the instructors to also assess and analyse what the students reviewed to check if they were fair in the grading. It's not nice to be wrongfully failed in an assignment.”

Coursera's 4.7 comes from 583 ratings. Of those, 1.4% are 1–2★.

Starisk reads the reviews learners voted most helpful, and weights each by the square root of its votes: a review with 80 upvotes counts about five times one with 2. Unvoted reviews are not skipped out of laziness — by this model they carry no evidence that other students endorsed them.

That measures what the most-endorsed reviews say, not “true quality.” The rating distribution above is the whole population, so you can see the sample next to it.
