The dissent

The most-upvoted critical review (2 votes, 3.0★).

“This course felt clunky. The concepts, which were really big ones for statistics and analysis, were covered quickly, really without good explanations - but were tested in detail. I think the material covered was thin in places and really only focused on the excel functions to use. The only reason I passed this course without struggle was my classes during my masters program. After grading the other final projects, I think this rating is right on. Most people failed the projects I graded. It feels like this class needs a content review.”

Coursera's 4.6 comes from 157 ratings. Of those, 3.8% are 1–2★.

Starisk reads the reviews learners voted most helpful, and weights each by the square root of its votes: a review with 80 upvotes counts about five times one with 2. Unvoted reviews are not skipped out of laziness — by this model they carry no evidence that other students endorsed them.

That measures what the most-endorsed reviews say, not “true quality.” The rating distribution above is the whole population, so you can see the sample next to it.
