The dissent

The most-upvoted critical review (no upvotes, 1.0★).

“I’ve been trying to complete the "Capstone Project: Applying UI/UX Design in the Real World" course on Coursera, and I am left with a very negative impression. First of all, the estimated time for the lab assignments is listed as 15–20 minutes, whereas in reality, they take hours of work. On top of that, their AI grading system fails to provide any actual explanation for the final test scores. Why does IBM even grade in such a strict manner? This isn’t a university. I understand using AI to ensure the work is done independently, but suffocating students over every single line is unacceptable. Dear IBM Instructors, have you actually tried taking your own labs? I doubt you could finish them in 15–20 minutes without using AI yourself. P.S. If you're considering a specialization, it's best to choose one from Google; it's more structured and has a fair grading system. Save yourself time and stress.”

Coursera's 3.6 comes from 19 ratings. Of those, 31.6% are 1–2★.

Starisk reads the reviews learners voted most helpful, and weights each by the square root of its votes: a review with 80 upvotes counts about five times one with 2. Unvoted reviews are not skipped out of laziness — by this model they carry no evidence that other students endorsed them.

That measures what the most-endorsed reviews say, not “true quality.” The rating distribution above is the whole population, so you can see the sample next to it.
